The Bronco Buster, 1895, #51 of an approximate edition of 64, inscribed in base “51 Frederic Remington”, incised on side “Copyrighted by/Frederic Remington 1895” stamped “The Henry-Bonnard Bronze Co. Founders . NY. 1899.”, stamped “Tiffany & Co.”, incised underneath “51”, bronze, height: 24 in., weight: 48.5 lbs.
Notes: A drawing made by Remington in 1892 titled, A Pitching Bronco, may have served to be the inspiration for The Bronco Buster, his debut cast as a sculptor. He found it so satisfying that he vowed “to put the wild life of our West into something that burglar won’t have, moth eat, or time blacken.” A 1899 casting numbered “55” is held by the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois. Another casting numbered “50”, sold at Sotheby’s New York, Thursday, December 2, 2010, as lot 107; Purchased in New York circa 1930’s or 1940’s
