A superlative offering in the American & Southern auction on September 23 is an exceptional and singular Federal bracket clock made in Baltimore between 1796 and 1815 by Anna Atkinson; it is thought to be one of the earliest examples of a signed object by a female craftsman in Federal America. She is presumed to be the mother of Baltimore clockmakers Matthew and William Atkinson.
Equally pioneering was Annabella Telfair (British, 1787-1832), or Mrs. Charles Telfair as she liked to sign her work, who was an illustrator and collector of plant specimens. Her known works are native to Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Africa, where she resided with her husband, the prominent Irish naturalist Charles Telfair. Brunk Auctions is thrilled to offer four exceptional botanical watercolors – a notably rare selection – in the British & Continental auction on September 24.
Maria Howard Weeden’s (Alabama, 1847-1905) sensitively rendered portraits of African Americans have seen renewed interest among collectors, and her portrait of John Rucker, who was also depicted in her poem “Easy Living” in the book “Bandanna Ballads, Including Shadows on the Wall”, is another highlight of Brunk Auctions’ September 23 American & Southern auction.
Edna Boies Hopkins’ (American, 1872-1937) “Grapes” is a delightful color woodcut on paper with the artist’s original paper mount.
Collectors of the works of Hazel Boehme (American, 1900-1941) will be interested in a modernist watercolor still life with calla lilies, and her memory book sketchbook with drawings from California.
Floral still life paintings by Elizabeth Rouviere (French, American, 1908-1994) are on offer in two lots in the British & Continental auction, September 24.
