Very Fine Charleston Carved and Inlaid Mahogany Rice Bed

Charleston, South Carolina, 1795-1810, with fine rice carved fluted and reeded foot posts, tapered square head posts, set with an upholstered canopy frame with hangings, pink fabric upholstered canopy with chintz hangings, 102 x 80-1/2 x 63 in.

Note: The exceptionally fluid carving on the footposts of this bed place it among the finest surviving from Federal era Charleston. Closely related examples include a bed in the collection of Winterthur Museum (see Montgomery, American Furniture, The Federal Period, catalog no. 8) and another illustrated in Milby Burton, Charleston Furniture, figure 19.

top 10 inches of foot posts and lower 12 inches of footposts restored, head posts are later replacements, original rails with some patches. The receipt indicates that study and conservation of the bed were undertaken with the assistance of John Bivins, Jr., and Russell Buskirk, of Charleston.
