French, late 19th century, brass compass with silvered dial and folding sight vanes, stamped on dial, "Made in France", signed verso "R.K. Spiller/1st Lieut. 26th Inf./1902", 3-1/2 in.; housed in a wooden leather covered case

Note: Robert K. Spiller of Virginia served in the US Volunteers April 1998 to June 1901. The latter part of his military career was as 1st Lieutenant of the 26th infantry in the Philippines.
