Roelof Koets the Elder

(Dutch, 1592–1655)

A Breakfast Still Life, 1643, a banquetje with strawberries in a wan-li bowl, ham and bread on pewter plates, walnuts, a bekerschroef with a berkemeier glass, grapes and an open chronometer or watch dated "1643", unsigned, oil on panel, 26-3/4 x 31-3/4 in.; modern ripple molding frame, 36-3/8 x 42 in.

Note: Brunk Auctions would like to thank Dr. Fred Meijer for his additional authentication of this painting as being by Roelof Koets I. According to Dr. Meijer the painting previously had a Pieter Claesz monogram and date 1643. While the devices used are those often used by Claesz and while the artists often collaborated, he believes the work to be entirely that of Koets.

This lot was also authenticated by Dr. Sam Segal, in 1985 and by Ingvar Bergström in 1984, both after viewing it in person. A photo certificate from Segal accompanies the lot. A large folder of documents and research also accompanies the lot and includes the original receipt and correspondence from Harari & Johns, a transparency, a facsimile of a letter of authentication from personal examination by Ingvar Bergström dated March 20, 1984.

For a similar example from the same period see Christie's Amsterdam: Wednesday, November 20, 2013, lot 146.
