Manner of Edouard Cortès

(French, 20th century)

Rue Royale, La Madeleine, spurious signature lower right "Edouard Cortès", oil on canvas, 24 x 30 in. (60.96 x 76.2 cm.); modern frame, 31-1/8 x 37-1/4 in.

Note: At the height of popularity of Edouard Cortès' paintings in the mid-20th century, other artists such as Antoine Blanchard and even his copyists were turning out these Parisian scenes to meet the demand. It was so great that Blanchard's signature was often removed and replaced with Cortès' name. The brushwork on this painting more closely relates to that of Antoine Blanchard and other copyists in Paris.
