Follower of William Beechey
(British, 1753-1839)
Portrait of an Officer in Military Uniform, possibly Captain Honywood (Philip Honywood?), unsigned, oil on canvas, 24 x 20 in.; gilt wood and composition frame, 30 x 25 in.
Note:
A label verso this painting indicates the artist a "Reynolds" (Sir Joshua Reynolds) and the sitter as "Honeywood" which was most often spelled without the "e". In 1901 a work of the same size, attributed to Sir William Beechey, was sold in New York at a sale of art including the collections of Eugene Fishof of Paris and T.J. Blakeslee of New York [American Art Journal, vol. 3, 1900-1901]. Beechey does not mention a Honywood sitter in his records. While Sir Joshua Reynolds painted members of the Honywood family, he does not list this painting either.
