Chinese Export Lacquered Sewing Box

circa 1850, octagonal sewing box, gold and black lacquer, filled with needlework implements, with intricate designs of royal figures with servants, brass side handles, lock and key, lift out fitted tray with compartments, includes bone thimbles, spools, needle cases, thread dispensers and clamp, and others, hidden drawer below with decorated compartments, 6 x 14 x 9-1/2 in.

Note: From a private collection representing 18th and 19th century tea caddies and boxes of various designs from America, Britain, Asia and Europe.
