Chinese Enamel Decorated Double Gourd Vase
Qing dynasty, underglaze blue Qianlong reign mark to base, double gourd form with flared neck and gilt rim, iron red, black, and gray enamel swirling clouds and waves decoration, 12 in.
Note: The Chinese Daoist strand of philosophy has always sought a harmonious and respectful relationship with nature. The fluid swirling wave design is a common emblem in pictures and on the hem of garments. Water in regular waves represents the sea with waves themselves, sometimes symbolizing a wish for a job in the Imperial service, given that the tide 潮 cháo made up of waves sounds the same as 朝 cháo which means 'Imperial court.'
