British School Portrait

(18th century)

Portrait of a Gentleman Relaxing in a Rustic Garden Chair, unsigned, oil on canvas, 50-1/8 x 40-1/8 in.; modern gilt wood frame, 56-5/8 x 46-5/8 in.

Note: The portrait is a rare depiction of a gentleman at his leisure in a rustic chair, a style that emerged in the 1750s along with other exotic styles of the British rococo movement. The "forest" furniture as it was also known, was intended largely for garden rooms, gazebos, grottoes and temples.
