Asian Lidded Earthenware Censer

Chinese or Vietnamese, 19th century, deep bell form censer or pomander resting on three molded elephant heads, pierced lid with figural finial of sage in meditation, gilt leiwen motifs on iron red ground, 13-1/2 x 5-1/2 in. diameter

Note: Pierced lid allows  for scent to be dispersed. Elephants are revered symbols in many cultures, as they are the largest living land mammals. In feng shui, they represent strength, protection, wisdom, and good luck.

break and repair to one side handle, some rubbing and losses to gilding, surface dirt and accretion
