American Chippendale Mahogany Tall Case Clock

arched brass dial signed "John Roulstone, Boston", circa 1770, brass eight day movement, strike silent and seconds sweep, date aperture, masked figural spandrels, arched pediment with central carved and gilt fan, hood with vine relief carved collonettes, waisted case and bracket feet, interior with early label "equation of time", gilt ball finials, 91-1/2 x 21-1/2 x 10 in.

Exhibited: Milwaukee Art Museum, American Decorative Arts Permanent Collection, 1975-1976; Milwaukee Art Museum, John Singleton Copley in America, May-September 1996.

lacking central finials, back corners of hood recessed (as made), saddle board replaced, works and case probably a good match but undetermined, some losses to blacking in chapter ring, minor repairs to scrolls on spandrels, some hands replaced, surface wear and finish losses including at tombstone door, box base with faint shadow (possibly lacking applied molding?), break and loss at bottom board, probably original feet with extensive fading
